Position Announcement
Cataloging Library Faculty
Illinois State University's Milner Library seeks a Cataloging Librarian to
join its staff of dedicated professionals. This is a full-time, multi-year
non-tenure-track position in the Cataloging and Records Maintenance Division
of Milner Library, reporting to its division head. The division is in the
process of merging with the Acquisitions and Collection Management Division
to form an integrated Bibliographic Services division (4 faculty and 23
classified staff).
University and Library: As Illinois' oldest public university, Illinois
State University offers an outstanding education to 17,500 undergraduates in
35 disciplines, and 2,500 graduate students in diverse master's and doctoral
programs. Milner Library supports those programs with a service-focused
staff of 110, a 425,000 square-foot building opened in 1976 that houses 1.4
million volumes, extensive web-based and graphical interface networks and
services supported by a Systems division of 15, and traditionally based
technical support units that utilize OCLC, GOBI, and other utilities. Milner
Library functions within a 44-member statewide library consortium
(ILCSO) which is implementing Endeavor's Voyager library system. Illinois
State is located in Normal/Bloomington, a growing community of 100,000 two
hours from Chicago and three hours from St. Louis or Indianapolis.
Responsibilities: Performs original cataloging and classification of
materials in assigned formats, and upgrades minimal-level cataloging found
on the OCLC system and in the ILCSO consortium's statewide union catalog.
Serves as resource for cataloging faculty and classified staff in assigned
areas. Participates in formulating policy and procedures, particularly in
assigned areas. Assists with complex copy cataloging as assigned. Works
occasionally at the General Reference and Documents Desk (including some
evening and weekend hours). Participates in the Library's general
instruction programs.
Required Qualifications: ALA accredited masters. Knowledge of general
cataloging forms, processes and techniques, and familiarity with basic
cataloging tools, specifically MARC bibliographic, authority, and holding
formats, LC classification, AACR2, LC rule interpretations, LC subject
heading practice, and ALA filing rules. Strong commitment to customer
service. Ability to work effectively with all levels of patrons and
colleagues. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral, communication
skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a strongly collegial and
participative environment and to manage diverse assignments in a rapidly
changing organization.
Preferred Qualifications: Technical knowledge of and experience working
with OCLC and the Voyager ILS. Reading knowledge of a foreign language.
Knowledge of visual media/realia, electronic resources, and/or sound
recording cataloging formats. Knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification.
Aptitude for accuracy and detail. Completed second advanced degree
preferred.
Salary and Benefits: $2,750/month through June 30, 2003, renewable
contingent upon satisfactory performance. 24 days vacation, 12 days sick
leave, and 11 paid holidays per year. Medical, dental, and life insurance
plans.
