<p>The <b>Libraries of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) </b>seek
an enthusiastic, creative, user-oriented reference librarian to play a
significant role in planning, developing, and implementing innovative digital
reference and instructional services throughout all of the libraries.
Junior librarians who are eager to participate in an innovative library
environment are encouraged to apply.
<p>The Electronic Reference Services Librarian coordinates the development,
evaluation, and advancement of the UCI Libraries’ electronic reference
services program. Together with the Electronic Reference Services
Team, the incumbent facilitates and provides support necessary to develop,
continuously improve, and promote online reference services. This
includes serving as Team Leader, managing the operations of the Libraries’
existing “Ask a Librarian” service, exploring and developing new interactive
models of reference service such as video reference, and participating
in University of California systemwide electronic reference services projects.
The incumbent consults broadly and works collaboratively with other UCI
Libraries employees including the Web Manager, Systems staff, and the Technology
Training Team as well as the library community at large. The Electronic
Reference Services Librarian is an active member of the Science Library
Research and Instructional Services Department, provides reference and
research consultation services at the multi-disciplinary Science Library
Reference Desk, and participates in the general library instruction program.

Strong interest in working with both undergraduate and graduate students,
as well as with faculty.</li>

<b><u>Science Library Research and Instructional Services Department</u></b>
<p>The Science Library Research and Instructional Services Department is
the primary research and information center of the Science Library, supporting
research and teaching in the Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering,
Information and Computer Science, and the Health and Medical Sciences.
The Department's services include reference desk and research consultation
services, electronic reference service, online searching, and a wide range
of instructional programs. The Reference Collection consists of over
22,000 volumes and a growing collection of electronic resources available
to UCI users through our Web pages. The Department consists of eight
librarians, four library assistants, and several student assistants.
<p><b><u>The Libraries</u></b>
<p>The UCI Libraries are in a major period of growth and consist of the
Main Library, the Science Library, and the Medical Center Library.
The Main Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social
Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, the Department
of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library
primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological
Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information
and Computer Science. The Medical Center Library serves the UCI Medical
Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from the main campus.
<p>The UCI Libraries have a staff of 287 FTE and an organizational structure
that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The
library collection consists of over 2.1 million volumes and 19,000 current
serial titles, a substantial microform collection, and an aggressively
expanding electronic resources collection. The UCI Libraries are
a member of the: Association of Research Libraries (ARL), California
Digital Library (CDL), Coalition of Networked Information (CNI),
Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Council on Library and Information
Resources (CLIR), and Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition
(SPARC).
<p><b><u>University of California, Irvine</u></b>
<p>One of ten University of California campuses, the University of California,
Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal foothills, five miles from
the Pacific Ocean, between San Diego and Los Angeles. The 1999-2000
enrollment was 19,285 students with a faculty of approximately 1,050.
The 1999-2000 student population numbered 15,522 undergraduates, 2,677
graduate students, and 1,086 health sciences students. Ethnic/minority
students represent about 62% of the student body. Growth in student
enrollment and faculty is anticipated at an approximate rate of 5% a year,
reaching a 50% increase by the year 2010. The University offers 29
doctoral programs in addition to the M.D. UCI is ranked nationally
in the top universities; several doctoral programs are ranked in the top
ten. UCI is a member of the Association of American Universities
(AAU).
<p>Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees
and receive potential career status at the time of their initial appointment.
Librarians are periodically subject to administrative and peer review for
merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence
and quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside
the Library; 3) university and public service; and 4) research and
other creative activity. They are entitled to two days per month
of annual leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental
fees, and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.
The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety
of group life and health insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately
40% of salary.
<p><b><u>Salary:</u></b> Commensurate with qualifications and experience
within an anticipated salary range of $37,728 - $48,984 (Assistant Librarian
I - Associate Librarian III); salary range pending union approval.
