Hi Tweeters:
I'll keep this brief as I'm really busy today. I'll post more later
(I hope).
We are seeing two Rough-legged Hawks in the Green River Valley south
of Kent. They have been seen for about 2 weeks. One is an adult, one
a juvenile. There are also two possible Harlan's Hawks, one a
light-morph, one a dark morph. Yesterday I also saw 3 different
Peregrine Falcons in the valley, plus an American Kestrel, and a
juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Roger Orness and I viewed the "Emerald Downs"
Peregrine Falcon from B St looking west toward Em Downs.
The 2 Roughies are being seen near 277th and I-167, as are the 2
(possible) Harlan's Hawks. (Harlan's are out in the Smith Bros field,
west of W Valley Hwy, and north of 277th). There are several juv
Red-tailed Hawks also, so ID'ing these birds can be challenging. One
of the Peregrines likes to perch on a line of telephones here. One
Roughy can be seen on the west of I-167, usually south of 277th along
W Valley Rd. View from 285th. The other Rough-legged Hawk is usually
east of I-167. Take the 277th exit from I-167, go about 1 blk, turn
right at the Toysmith Bldg, and travel the road down into Thomas field
and to the new mitigated pond. It might be seen near the pond or in
the field. Beautiful juvenile with a dark belly. Wow.
Yesterday Roger saw a N Shrike down on 287th near the west end where
it hits up against the wooded ridge. Again most of these areas can be
accessed off of the S 277th St exit, off I-167 south of Kent.
