Fred Boesche and I set out this morning to try to find the Baikal Teal I
thought I had observed last Sunday at the Kent Ponds. At around 1:30 in the
afternoon, we achieved our goal and were able to verify the teal. We had
looked briefly in the morning, headed up to Cedar River for a while, then
came back and there it was with about 30 Green-winged Teal. The spot where
we saw it today should be quite easily viewable from the Powerline Trail on
the southern border of the property. From the bridge near 64th Ave, walk up
to near the third power tower and scope the waterway over the weir. When the
bird flushed after a minute or two, it flew into another area of the lagoon,
which should be visible from the south viewing tower (with a scope). No
bands were noted on the bird. The Baikal mixed well with the other waterfowl
and seemed, if anything, more apt to flush than they were.
Also today we had a Common Yellowthroat along the northern part of Frager
Road. A good bird to look for on a CBC.
I've posted two images of this attractive duck at:
Bonney Lake, Washington
