Hi Tweeters,

I had a chance to do some boating with friends yesterday (May 2) in South
Puget Sound. We traveled through Drayton and Pitt Passages and into Carr
Inlet north to Cutts Island State Park, all of which are in western Pierce
County. We made some bird observations along the way. There wasn't much
activity at this time of the year, but we did see the following:

Common Loon - 8
Pacific Loon - 4, nice to see birds almost in breeding plumage
Horned Grebe - 6
Eared Grebe - 1 possible bird
Western Grebe - 1 flock of 16
Pelagic Cormorant - about 6
Canada Geese - at least 4-5 pairs nesting on Cutts Island at the high tide
Harlequin Duck - 3 at Cutts Island
Surf Scoter - 25-30
Glacous-winged Gull - 20-30
Common Murre - 25-30, mostly in pairs
Pigeon Guillemot - 50-75, most common bird of the day
Rhinoceros Auklet - 1
Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 1 on Cutts Island
