here's an update on the california condor release
CALIFORNIA CONDOR BREEDING TRASHED: "Glass shards and
metal scraps have killed or threatened two of the
three condor chicks born this year in the wild," said
the San Francisco Chronicle, 10/11. "The third is
only days away from becoming the first wild condor
fledgling in California in 20 years."
The California condor captive breeding program is
expanding, with releases in Big Sur and Pinnacles
National Monument. However, many of the wild
hatchlings have died or had their growth stunted after
ingesting large amounts of trash. "It's a huge
problem. You can pump out as many captive-bred chicks
as you want, but if you can't get them to reproduce in
the wild, the rest is inconsequential," said Allan
Mee, a wildlife biologist at the San Diego Zoo.
