I checked a few areas in Clark County on Sunday, July 31st, for
migrants but found few other than LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and GREATER
YELLOWLEGS.
At the Steigerwald Lake Refuge I found that four pair of PURPLE
MARTINS were feeding young in nests in cottonwood snags where I had seen
them checking the cavities earlier in the spring. The only other birds of
interest here were a GREAT EGRET and one AMERICAN BITTERN.
At Vancouver Lake there were no mudflats showing and no shorebird at
all but the Western/Clark's Grebe flotilla continues. I counted 88
WESTERN GREBES and 7 CLARK'S GREBES.
By the time I arrived at the Ridgefield Refuge it was near ninety
degrees and the birds were inactive. I did see two BROWN CREEPERS and a
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH at the Observation Blind and two AMERICAN
BITTERNS in Rest Lake. The observation blind has been removed in
preparation of replacement in August.
