Sorry I couldn't post yesterday's sighting of the KING EIDER, but I just
got my power back.
On Saturday afternoon, about 3:30 to 4:00, the KING EIDER was spotted
just outside the floats on the southwest corner of the marina at the end
of Semiahmoo Spit. I had seen a picture of the bird taken shortly after
he was first spotted and the picture showed the Eider with an American
Widgeon. When I saw the KING EIDER yesterday, he was with a Widgeon once
again...... the only Widgeon in the area. Also present, among the
regulars, was a SURFBIRD in a group of about 25 BLACK TURNSTONES.
Today, when I arrived (about 11:00 AM) another birder informed me that
the KING EIDER was there (same place as Saturday but inside the float on
the SW corner of the marina) but went under the float and disappeared. I
then scoped the open water south of the float and found the Eider
swimming toward the marina by himself. He swam to the outside of the
float and fed on the seaweed on the float for at least another
half hour before I left. The bird continues to look quite healthy and
contented. hopefully it will stick around through the winter.
