...............An absolutely beautiful day......before the clouds moved
in around 6:00pm
................They are pumping in water to various ponds to get them
ready for the duck hunters. (.....in a wildlife *refuge* ????)
So......they must have temporarily cut of the water to Rest Lake as it
was very low with many areas of mud flats. As a result there were a bit
more than 14 GREAT EGRETS; scads of GREAT BLUE HERONS; 3 AMERICAN
BITTERNS; about 80-100 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS; loads of ducks--most
still in eclipse plumage., and some smaller SANDPIPER-sized shorebirds
seen at a distance. GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS were reported by
others nearby. A WILSON'S SNIPE in the swamps nearby a bit noreast of
the lake.
...............About 300-400 SANDHILL CRANES were 'strung-out for a
long ways along the base of the SE directional dike south of Rest Lake.
They were too busy eating to make much noise, except a few noisy ones
flying in to join the crowd!!!
................A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was observed, though I didn't
personally didn't see one, though I saw a number of GOLDEN-CROWNED
SPARROWS in the willow trees area west part of Kiwa Trail area. Several
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS (immatures) along with HARRIER HAWKS and RED-TAILED
HAWKS. Some SWALLOWS and an AM. GOLDFINCH still around, along with
RED-WINGED and BREWERS BLACKBIRDS and 1 BELTED KINGFISHER.
................Plenty ofWESTERN PAINTED TURTLES along with 1
GREEN-WINGED TEAL in the middle of then along the slough --north end of
road. A GREEN HERON was also reported seen. Female WOOD DUCK nearby. No
migratory Canada Geese yet, though I have heard they are starting to
show up at places further north. Otheewise, pretty quiet right now these
last days before Oct/1st when you can no longer walk the tour road or
Kiwa Trail for the winter months.....or get out of your car to set up a
spotting scope( ...except for 1 or2 special areas.) (....of course...you
get 'out of the car', and "POOF"--- all the fowls dissappear!!!.) :-)

................Cheers
                Gerald Hamilton
