Dear Tweeters,

I just got back from five days birding in Eastern
Washington, but perhaps the bird of the trip was an
adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK that happened to fly by in the
forests below Mount Rainier.

After learning that the road up to Paradise would be
snowed in, I left Rainier and headed back toward Elbe.
Not far below the park entrance is a hostelage known
as Alexander's Country Inn. The Goshawk bolted right
in front of my car, then made a low-angle tactical
strike at the busy bird-feeders of the inn. I got a
quick but good look at this bird--lucky thing I am the
slowest driver in North America.

As a way of rewarding the hotelier for attracting such
a raptor, I went in, still wearing my binoculars, and
ordered the Denver omelette. It was delicious. The
feeders were swarming with Pine Siskins, Varied
Thrushes, Steller's Jays, and Oregon Juncoes. Yay!

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
