On Saturday, June 28, my wife and I headed up to Trout Lake in
Klickitat County in hopes of escaping the heat. We birded along the
nature trail at Elk Meadows RV Park, just west of town where we found six
GRAY CATBIRDS and a nice variety of other birds. Susan and I then
continued west to Goose Lake in Skamania County in hope of spotting the
Purple Martins that use the snags in the lake for nesting, no luck on
this quest. We also failed to escape the heat or to make it to several
other birding spots due to closed roads. It seemed pretty strange for the
roads to be blocked by snowdrifts when the temperature was 88 degrees at
the 5,000' elevation. We had to turn back on five different routes due to
snow and the main east/west road (the Carson-Guler Rd, N60) between Trout
Lake and Carson was still blocked at the west side of Goose Lake. I have
never seen this much snow at this elevation so late in the year, it has
to be affecting the nesting species that should be there now.
