Today (11/17/08) Susan and birded into Klickitat County to escape
the strong east winds that were blowing at our place in the west end of
the Columbia Gorge. Good numbers of waterfowl are now starting to build
in the bays all along the Columbia River. At Stevenson, Skamania County,
the 11 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were still on the lawn of the Rock
Creek Fairgrounds.
In Klickitat County the most interesting birds found were the 30
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in the vicinity of the Dallesport School, the
largest group of these birds I have encountered in Washington.
From Dallesport we drove over the Dalles Mountan Road in hopes of
encountering any migrant finches, but about the only birds we saw were 6
LESSER GOLDFINCHES, a few BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES and 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.
We did see a large number of Black-tailed Deer on the way to the summit,
without much searching we counted 61 deer on the day after "Late Buck"
hunting season. From the top of Dalles Mountain we drove back to the
Columbia River by going down the Lyle-Goldendale Road, along this route
we spotted another 50 deer. We found WILD TURKEYS in three spots
including one flock of 69 birds, the total number of turkeys seen was
about 150.
