Today, Susan and I traveled Highway 14 through the length of
Skamania County looking for migrants. When we stopped at the Franz Lake
NWR overlook we were delighted to be there as the TUNDRA SWANS were just
arriving. About 200 were on the lake and more were flying in as we
watched, among these birds we picked out one TRUMPETER SWAN, a first for
my Skamania County list. Also on the lake along with the numerous
RING-NECKED DUCKS were a pair of NORTHERN SHOVELERS and six CANVASBACK.
From the overlook above Bonneville Dam we spotted a RED-NECKED
GREBE in a flock of fifteen WESTERN GREBES.
Just downstream of the mouth of the Wind River there was a large raft of
about a thousand LESSER SCAUP with two hundred and fifty WESTERN GREBES
scattered through them. This was the largest concentration of grebes I
have seen in this county.
