Lower Hood Canal from about the Tahuya River northeast back to Belfair is completely frozen over from all this cold. In the past three days the tiny open areas have become nonexistant. The only open water was is small pools along the shoreline in some areas. The ice is about a half inch thick, enough to support a gull.

What few waterfowl there were sharing the diminishing open areas are now gone. A few unhappy and hungry looking great blue herons still keep their watches from icy perches. Foraging for them comes only at high tide when open areas appear along the shore. Yesterday a few wigeons huddled like rocks near where a stream entered the canal but that too was frozen over.

Hopefully all the waterfowl have moved out into the area from Potlatch north where there is better chance of open water. Unfortunately I haven't had the time to go out there and check. In the meantime the iced over Canal looks inviting for skating which the few gulls still around do whenever they try to land.

The forecast is for a bit of warming this weekend so, hopefully, the ice will melt and the birds can return.
