The eBird Notable Birds Gadget (http://ebird.org/content/ebird/home/birding-news-and-features/news/Google_Gadget.html) is a really useful tool for those interested in chasing birds, but it does need to be used with caution. It lists ALL reports submitted, even unscreened ones, so tremendously unusual reports can show up there. You can check to see if there is a green "checkmark" next to the sighting, indicating that one of the eBird reviewers has approved the sighting. In this case I didn't get to the report quickly enough before people saw the unscreened report.
The description included with this sighting includes a few incompatible details if it were a Black-tailed Gull, and apparently the bird was only seen naked-eye. Obviously a record of this magnitude (on a continent-wide scale) would need further substantiation.
Cheers and good birding,
Bonney Lake, Washington
