Hello all,
Walla Walla County ended 2008 with a cumulative total of 254 - 3 less than
2007. We tried to get a good start on 2009 - with wind and rain keeping
passerine numbers down - ended up with 65 species. Here are the highlights
of today:
Clark's Grebe - 1 on the Columbia River off Hwy 730. Our best bird of the
day as we only see one or two of these here a year.
Canvasback - 2200+ - large rafts of diving ducks off the Wallula Grain
Terminal.
Redhead - 700+
Ring-necked Duck - 500
Greater Scaup - 1100+
Lesser Scaup - 1000+
Common Goldeneye - 50+
Western Grebe - 2
Bufflehead - 6
Common Merganser - 150+ below Ice Harbor Dam
Barrow's Goldeneye - 2 below Ice Harbor Dam
Am. White Pelicans - 31 below dam and 22 at Casey Pond
Mike fed gulls below the dam and near Casey Pond - mostly Ring-billed, a few
Herring and Glaucous-winged and 4 Mew Gulls.

Eurasian Collared-Dove - 6 in Touchet.
Saw-whet Owl - 1 in Charbonneau Park
Great Horned Owl - also in Charbonneau
Merlin - " " + 1 in Walla Walla

The full list will be posted on the Blue Mountain Audubon website at
blumtn.org by tomorrow.
Later, Mike
