Dear Tweeters,

My apologies if this got sent twice.

There were lots of people looking at, and shooting at, waterfowl today (1-23-2010) in Skagit County. Highlights included:

"COMMON" TEAL, one drake at DeBay's Slough, with a small GWTE flock.

Cackling Goose, one with Snow Geese at Hayton Preserve.

Greater White-fronted Goose, one very close to the roadside on Maupin Road (Fir Island). This looked like the same bird that showed up repeatedly in late fall at Hayton Preserve.

Canada Goose, small flocks at Cockreham Island, Sedro-Woolley, and Beaver Lake.

Oh, by the way, there is a small improvement to be noted at the Fir Island Game Range (Wylie Slough). They've cleared the downed timber that was blocking the little trail that goes east from the access road. Now it is more open in there, and the trail has been covered with wood chips for much of its length; there is a little clearing with some tidy, yet bird-friendly brush piles in it. This trail is on your left as you drive in, before the fork in the road where you have to choose parking lots. I saw lots of sparrows, kinglets, wrens, and so forth in there today. There were several Audubon's Warblers. I am holding out a sliver of hope that this might be an ersatz Waterthrush spot, come next fall.

Yours truly,
