Greetings All,
In response to the recent threads about wandering Acorn Woodpeckers, Steve Shunk took the time to put together a nice discussion article that is now published online at Birdfellow.com. Steve is the author of a soon-to-be-published Peterson Reference Guide to the Woodpeckers of North America. This article speaks to a variety of questions that have come up during recent OBOL (Oregon Birders Online) and Tweeters (Washington birders listserv) discussions about increasing reports of Acorn Woodpeckers wandering away from their expected range in the Pacific Northwest.
To read Steve Shunk's authoritative commentary on this topic, check out "The Wanderings of Acorn Woodpeckers."
