Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This report
was made Thursday October 7. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
On October 1 a BLUE JAY was in midtown Bend. A possible third year
SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen October 1 at the Necanicum Estuary in Seaside. On
October 3 an OVENBIRD was along Tumalo Creek west of Bend.
The first main flight of CACKLING GEESE arrived during the week along with a
number of SNOW GEESE. RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS are lingering this fall. On
October 6 an ANNA¹S, RUFOUS, and BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD were in Bend.
Among the many birds seen on an offshore boat trip out of Newport October 2
were two FLESH-FOOTED SHEARWATERS, four SKUAS, 12 POMARINE, and 16 PARASITIC
On October 3 a TROPICAL KINGBIRD was near Cape Blanco. At Bandon October 1
was a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and 15 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. Four LAPLANDS were on
the North Spit of Coos Bay that day. On October 4 an EURASIAN WIGEON was on
Siletz Bay. A FRANKLIN¹S GULL was at the Necanicum Estuary October 4. A PALM
WARBLER was north of Gearhart October 6.
A PALM WARBLER was in Battleground, WA during the week. Several ACORN
WOODPECKERS were reported at Oak Island on Sauvie Island during the week. A
DIPPER was seen October 5 along the Willamette River near the St. Johns
Bridge in Portland. A HORNED GREBE was on the Willamette near the Hawthorne
Bridge and another was in Oaks Bottom October 4. A POORWILL was flushed in a
southwest Portland neighborhood October 2. On October 1 an EURASIAN WIGEON
was in Oaks Bottom. On October 4 a bright male SURF SCOTER was at the mouth
of the Tualatin River in West Linn. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW and a
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW were reported in Eugene October 1.
On October 1 a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was near Sisters. An ACORN WOODPECKER
was in Bend October 2. A GREEN HERON was reported during the week at the P
Ranch in Malheur NWR. A MEW GULL was at Malheur Headquarters October 4. On
October 6 a CATBIRD and two SCRUB-JAYS were near Hines.
