[Tweeters] attack of the pigeons

Sometimes several days pass between Band-tailed Pigeon visits to our feeders, and I wonder if they might be gone for the winter. But no worries. Right now there are at least 16 of them, way too many to be accommodated, so they are constantly jostling one another and flying back and forth, down to the ground, up into the trees. Six or seven may fit on one feeder at a time, almost like a ball of Bushtits. There may be more than 16, as I can't see what is above the house. This is the largest number I have seen at once for quite a few years.

When they feed at length, they clean out all feeders in a few hours and have been likened to a feathered plague (preferable to starlings, though). But this happens seldom, as they are very nervous and when even one of them is startled, all may take off explosively, scattering in all directions, perhaps not to return that day.
