Hey tweets, the swans who have been gracing Lake Washington this
winter took it into their heads to visit Union Bay yesterday. Ten
Trumpeters floated around at the mouth of Yesler Cove, while 13
preened on the skinny mud island that has popped up in the middle of
the bay. Four of these islanders were gray immatures. One, though, was
really different: a Tundra Swan! First of year for me.

Also planted on the island were several pale ducks, mostly wigeons
(pale because they were out of water and were preening their bellies),
and 6 Dunlins. It was like watching a set for the Three Bears: Giant
Papa Bears, mid-sized Mama Bears, and teeny little Baby Bears. Very
funny.

In other news, UW Botanic Gardens has set up a donation post at the
kiosk in hopes that people will drop small contributions (or big
ones!) in at will. Please feel free to add to the pile.

Friends of Yesler Swamp have received all the necessary permits to
begin building a boardwalk trail through the swamp, emerging at Yesler
Cove, where there will be a bird blind. The group is actively fund-
raising now. If you'd like to contribute to the effort, check out
their website, where there is a "Donate" button you can press:
