We've filled up fast with birders for our CBC, but seek a person or team to cover the Portage Creek WMA. This prime wetland is close to Island Crossing and has recently had Swamp and Lincoln's Sparrows, Virginia Rails galore, and in past years the occasional Am. Bittern. The marshland is extensive and waders are advisable, or at least knee-high rubber boots for getting into the far southwest corner in particular, where the Swamps have shown the most often. Looking for someone with sharp ears especially, particularly for the calls of Lincoln's Sparrows and Marsh Wrens. Swamp Sparrows are rare but were found during November here.
Nearly across the street from the main entrance to Portage Creek is an entrance to the wooded trails that head both east and west along the north end of Arlington airport. There is a nice wooded access off the south side of the airport as well, plus extensive farmland and hedgerow thickets at and near Island Crossing itself. The territory's western boundary is I-5. Raptors (including occasional Rough-legged Hawk) and swans have shown well in the open farmland here.
Please let me know if you are interested, the territory will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis to the right birder(s). I have the map and more pointers on other spots to check, will be a full day of coverage.
