Hi Tweets - Kathleen and I arrived at the west end of D'Arcy Rd on the Samish flats just after (aarrgghh) Gary Bletsch had seen the Gyr leave a pole, very near where Jordan Gunn and I had seen it a week ago. Gary said it had flown south toward the apple orchard, up on the higher ground of Bayview Edison Rd. We drove slowly up the grade, through the orchard, and into an area with some tall dead snags on the east side of the road. I stopped quickly when I saw a smallish raptor on a snag to the southeast. Setting up the scope, it was clear from the strong face pattern (helmet), that this was 'just' a Peregrine. Glancing to the right a bit, I noticed another raptor in another snag that was larger. A quick swing of the scope showed that this was indeed, the Gyr! Dorsal gray-brown color with only a faint facial pattern when it turned its head; wings, when settled, well shorter than the tail. I called Doug Schurman (who I knew from Gary to be in the area), but, regrettably, the bird flew just before Doug arrived to get his usual great photos. In any case - it's up there, seems to be hanging around that southern part of Samish Flats! Good birding!! - Jon Houghton, Edmonds
