The Vancouver Lake Lowlands in Clark County, WA, are a critical wildlife area supporting over 150,000 wintering swans, geese, ducks and Sandhill Cranes as well as nesting habitat for neo-tropical migrants. The Lowlands are designated as a Priority Habitat by the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife and is an Audubon/Birdlife International Important Bird Area. After a forty year struggle by conservationists, the Port of Vancouver agreed not to industrialize the areas to the north of the Flushing Channel. The Port has turned over more than 500 acres of their lands north of the Flushing Channel to the Columbia Land Trust, and is providing them with millions of dollars to manage it as wintering habitat for Sandhill Cranes and other migratory birds. It was thought that this would protect the wildlife from disturbance but now there is a new proposal from the Clark County Parks Department that threatens to undo this work. They are proposing to build a tournament disc golf course at Frenchman's Bar Park, here is the link to the newspaper article: http://www.columbian.com/news/2016/jan/13/duo-tee-off-on-plans-for-disc-golf-course/ This park adjoins the crane management area, has a Great Blue Heron Rookery across the road from it, a Bald Eagle nest on the proposed course and the park is home to the Federally Endangered Slender-billed White-breasted Nuthatch and Columbian White-tailed Deer. The Vancouver Audubon Society opposes any sports complexes or other high intensity activities in the Lowlands that would diminish the value of this habitat. There will be a Parks Dept. meeting on this project on March 11, please help protect this great birding area by expressing your opinion before then to:
