Some interesting catkin info sent me by a botanically-knowledgable Tweet :

The Common Redpolls and other birds that we are now seeing on birch and alder trees are feeding on clusters of seeds which which were produced on female catkins last summer on these trees. The hazelnut-tree catkins that are out now, just have pollen (on male-flower catkins), which is not very attractive to the finchy birds, so now, anyway, birds aren't feeding on catkin pollen, just nutritious seeds. I think that's at least part of how this works ! Please correct me if I have it mixed-up.
