I took inspiration from Walter Szeliga's post about his observation of the 10 White-winged Crossbills in spruce trees near the Central Washington University library on Friday. I arrived today and at 11 a.m. started my three-hour walk around campus and up Craig's Hill. It has been sunny and pleasant, near 30 degrees, with no wind. I did not find either species of crossbill but decided to drive slowly around Craig's Hill before giving up. At 2:15 p.m., at the corner of 3rd & Maple, four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew into the top of a spruce in the yard of a white house with black shutters. I was able to park, get out and get my binoculars on them to confirm two adult males and two adult females. As I reached into the car for my camera, they flew off to the west. There are suitable trees on the west side of Chestnut but they may well favor Craig's Hill.
