[Tweeters] Birds Shredding Live Onions

Hi Tweets,

Wondering if anyone on this list can shed light on a problem mentioned to
me by a farmer in Duvall. She told me that birds were shredding the tops of
her planted onions. It was pretty destructive to her crop. She encountered
this a number of years ago but not in recent years until now. She saw it
happening but can't ID the species.

QUESTIONS:
1. Why would birds do this? In particular, it's my understanding that
onions are toxic to birds.
2. Might there be a way to discourage the behavior, short of netting the
field?

Thanks!
