Carol Riddell and I enjoyed a long, exciting, and rewarding day exploring
the confusing maze of narrow logging roads in Capitol Forest yesterday.
FYI: the forest has several access points near Olympia, WA and, in some
areas the often unmarked logging roads cross over from Thurston County into
Grays Harbor County.
The good news is the weather was beautiful, the birds were singing, we
survived several encounters with huge trucks, and, best of all, we found
most of our target birds, e.g., HERMIT WARBLER & GRAY JAY. The Townsend
Solitaire was a no show. A complete list is available in our Ebird report.
CAUTIONARY NOTE: they are resurfacing many of the roads, hauling in dump
trucks of gravel and grading it on the single lane roads with few, if any,
pullouts. We had to back up several miles when we encountered one huge dump
truck . Hard to understand why they didn't post warnings or close the road
to traffic until the project was completed.
