David and I took a few of hours to look for Pierce Co shorebirds in yesterday’s sun, first heading for Chambers Bay for the 1:30 low tide. We walked far to the north along the rocky beach, seeing little but DC Cormorants, crows and GW Gulls, but on the way back, less than a couple hundred yards north of the stairway to the beach, we came upon a flock of birds that apparently flew in when we were trudging northward. There were 4 Sanderlings, still mostly in breeding plumage, sticking together; in a separate duo were a Semipalmated Plover and a Baird’s Sandpiper; a second duo was a pair of Semipalmated Sandpipers that flew off to the south w/o reappearing over the 20 min. we were scoping the area.

We stopped at Levee Pond Park in Fife on the way home, but the only shorebirds were 5 Western Sandpipers, bright juveniles. There was also a Green Heron at the left end of the pond.

The day was gorgeous, and we enjoyed seeing a new place—Chambers Bay with its imposing golf course, vast lawns for kite-flying, and bridge to the beach.
