The new Program Year begins for the Washington Ornithological Society (WOS) on Monday, October 3rd.  Our Speaker will be Jim Danzenbaker who will enlighten us with a program on Westport Seabirds and Pelagic Birding in Washington.  We are fortunate to have perhaps this outstanding birding resource available for pelagic birding in the State but it also is an enormously valuable resource for data on pelagic birds with consistently reported observations for more than 30 years.  Among his many other birding credentials, Jim has been a spotter on Westport Seabird Pelagic trips for many years.  It is also very fitting that Jim will be our speaker as this will be his first meeting as the new WOS President.
WOS programs are held the first Monday of every month beginning in October.  They are held at the Urban Horticulture Center at the University of Washington and are open to WOS members and the public.  Social time begins at 7:00 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m.
Also mark your calendars for another superb program for Monday November 7th.  Our speaker will be Tim Boyer and the program will be Understanding Shorebirds, the Miracle of Migration.  Emphasis will be on eight of the forty-two common shorebirds found in Washington are discussed, as we will explore the trans-ocean migration of Bar-tailed Godwits, Pacific Golden-Plovers, Sanderling and other birds that cross the majority of the Pacific Ocean. We’ll look at where they migrate, why they migrate and how they are able to travel so far. These global migrants require global conservation and climate change solutions. In a effort to understand their remarkable journeys we need to look beyond the North American borders and see where shorebirds spend most of their lives.
Looking forward to a great year.
Blair BernsonWOS Program Chair
