I took a brief walk behind my house this morning in hopes of finding
my FOY Black-Throated Gray Warbler or Pacific-Slope Flycatcher. No
luck on either of those, but I heard what sounded like the second note
of a Hammond's Flycatcher song. After a bit of effort I eventually got
a look at the Hammond's sitting at the top of a maple tree and I was
able to ellicit a few calls to confirm the ID. This beats my earliest
date for Snohomish county by 3 days.
This was actually the third new yard bird for the day. First thing
this morning I heard a Hermit Thrush. As I tried to get a look at it,
I spotted my first Lincoln's Sparrow as well.
On 4/15, I had two Caspian Tern's fly upstream above the river. I had
them over the river a few times last summer, so this may be a fairly
regular excursion they make to find food.
