Tweets,
Sitting here putting last week’s SE AZ trip into Avisys, it occurs to me that there may be WA birders heading to the area for ABA birds. Two pieces of news:

To get into Ft. Huachuca in Sierra Vista is now more complicated. They are accepting our “unenhanced” WA drivers’ licenses for a while longer (whatever extension the Feds just gave WA) but you can no longer just drive in—you must go to the East Gate, park and go inside, fill out a form, get an interview, and have a photo taken. You get an i.d. card that is good for 30 days. We had our passports (thinking our licenses wouldn’t work) and were turned away from the Main Gate, which we had easily entered a half dozen times over the years. This cost us an hour of a.m. birding time. Had we known we’d have done this the day before, then used the Main Gate the next day. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (I think)

Secondly, Montezuma Quails (one pair, anyway) are coming into Ash Canyon B & B (on Turkey Track Rd. our of Sierra Vista) fairly regularly. Since we were last there 3 yrs. ago, the owner has set up a second viewing area with a photo blind, and the birds seem to come in in the late afternoon along that fence. We have probably been to AZ 15 times and have always missed this bird, even though they are reportedly often seen in the Chiracahuas where we spent 3 days this trip with no luck. We were thrilled to see them feeding on the ground for more than 15 minutes. We also heard other Montezuma Quails calling in the nearby fields.

Back to Avisys,
